PL9 Goals and Plans For Awareness

Philip’s mother believes that if there was sufficient awareness of cardiac risks in children and defibrillators in public places such as schools, sports centers, and churches, the chances of surviving cardiac arrest would be increased significantly. Juliet Lamin has spent the last eight years tirelessly raising awareness and campaigning for defibrillators to be placed in all schools and public places with this goal in mind. She is also advocating for free heart screenings for young athletes who may have an underlying heart defect, in order to detect it prior to a serious incident that could result in death, as happened with her son.

Juliet stated that if a heart screening exercise had been conducted when Philip was scouted, she would have prevented him from continuing to participate in sports until he received medical treatment. She believes that if her son’s school had a defibrillator and his classmates had been taught how to perform CPR, her son might have survived. This is why a portion of the PL9 campaign is dedicated to raising funds to purchase defibrillators for placement in each secondary school in the community.

Juliet also encourages parents to ensure their teenagers undergo heart screenings and schools to invest in defibrillators and yearly heart screenings. This early heart screening can aid in the early detection and treatment of any heart disease.
